About #Mathub’Olusha

Igniting Youth Potential. Powering SMEs. Shaping South Africa’s Future.

#Mathub’Olusha (opportunities for youth) is a national multi-stakeholder dialogue platform that seeks to mobilise South Africa’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to take centre stage in accelerating youth economic participation. The initiative aims to connect youth, SMEs, and the national skills development and youth placement ecosystem, bringing together government, business, youth placement and SME development agencies, and academic institutions to co-create sustainable pathways for youth employability through  SME engagement. Rooted in research and driven by collaboration, #Mathub’Olusha exists to galvanise efforts that:

  • Facilitate youth access to internships, work-integrated learning, and employment opportunities in SMEs.
  • Support SMEs in becoming engines of inclusive growth by helping them absorb and train young talent.
  • Strengthen partnerships between SETAs, SME employers, TVET colleges, universities, youth organisations, policymakers, and various other key actors.
  • Champion practical solutions, including mentorship, funding access, simplified processes, and digital matchmaking platforms.

An initiative of Rendzo Network Africa, in partnership with Services SETA, #Mathub’Olusha comprises two elements:

  • An international benchmarking study on SME-youth engagement: motivations, perceptions, approaches, enablers and inhibitors.
  • A 2-day multi-stakeholder Summit on 29-30 May 2025, to exchange experiences and lessons and to map out a collaborative effort to drive impactful SME-youth engagement across all sectors of the South African economy.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, policymaker, educator, funder, youth leader, researcher, or youth placement practitioner join us in creating a future where SMEs are talent incubators and young people are change agents.

SUMMIT WILL START IN

Because South Africa’s greatest opportunity is its youth—and its most underutilised growth engine is its SMEs. Recent research by TIPS indicates that in 2024 South Africa had almost 700 000 formal sector small businesses, defined as those with under 50 employees each. In other words, the majority of South Africa’s workplaces are in the small and medium-size category. This represents significant scope to markedly increase youth absorption into the country’s small workplaces.

Attending the #Mathub’Olusha Summit is a chance to be part of a visionary move to shape the future of youth employment in South Africa. The Summit offers a space to engage directly with SME leaders, policy influencers, education experts, funders, and innovators who are actively working to create opportunities for young people. Delegates will gain valuable insights from research on SME-youth engagement dynamics and benefit from shared experiences and case studies from both local and international contexts. Participants will also take part in interactive discussions and workshops that focus on real-world challenges and propose workable solutions. The Summit provides opportunities to network, collaborate, and co-create meaningful partnerships that will drive change beyond the event itself.

The #Mathub’Olusha Summit aims to facilitate meaningful dialogue and partnerships and seeks to identify the practical challenges that hinder youth employment in SMEs and to uncover opportunities for innovative solutions. The Summit will develop concrete, actionable strategies that can be implemented across sectors to enhance the capacity of SMEs to host, train, and empower young people. It also aims to spotlight successful models and practices, and to mobilise resources, partnerships, and sustained engagement for long-term implementation.

Target Audience

The Summit is designed to attract a wide array of participants including SME owners and managers, representatives from Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) and the National Skills Fund, policymakers, youth organisations, researchers, education & training and youth placement practitioners, development partners, investors, and relevant international agencies. This diverse group of attendees reflects the cross-sectoral collaboration that is necessary to address youth employment in a meaningful and scalable way.

Summit speakers

The Mathub’Olusha Summit will feature leading voices from across South Africa and beyond who are actively shaping the future of youth employment and SME development. These include seasoned SME practitioners, policy-makers, youth leaders, education and training experts, and international specialists with deep insights into employment creation and SME growth ecosystems.
